Today, I’d like to touch on something that every business owner faces at some point….how do you know if you need a trademark?
If you own or manage a business, you have at least one trademark- the name of your company.
You may have others like product names, service names, logos, or slogans – these are all different trademarks. They are all valuable assets to your brand.
You’ll know that you need a trademark if you are using one of the above “branding elements” to sell a product or service.
The problem is that just forming your business and registering it with your state’s Department of State does not mean that you OWN your business name or other branding elements.
What would you do if you woke up one day and you found out that the same business name, logo, slogan, or tag-line is being used by someone else to sell their products or service?
I’m sure you would be pretty upset.
Here’s the thing, though, in order to protect these trademarks, it’s critical that you register them with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”).
Registering your trademark is the ONE thing that will help you, OWN, protect and scale your business.
